After I made my felt beads the other day, I had a little bit of purple wool top fibres leftover. Hmmm, what to make?! I decided to attempt this 3D felt heart – I’m quite into decorative hearts and have a good few of them hanging around in different places throughout my home!
Anyway, I followed the same process as for the felt beads. I used hot water to wet the wool, then rubbed the wool with soap whilst sculpting it into shape. I did a couple of failed attempts where the heart was either too small or too flat! So finally for this one pictured above, I started off with a large round ball of wool having carefully wound the wool fibres around and around so that it was quite dense to begin with. And then once the wool was starting to felt, I gradually pulled and prodded it into the heart shape with my fingers!
Lastly, I dipped the felt heart into ice cold water to set the fibres, letting it dry before adding the flat felt layers and sewing around the edges with seed beads. I then added some pink ribbon so I could hang it up. Ta da!
I’m really pleased with it! It’s now hanging from my mantlepiece!
If you fancy having a go at this, take a look at the process for making felt beads first. This is what I did on a larger scale and then I shaped it into the heart towards the end of the process.
